Berg Lake Trail bookings: launch day and cancellations

The whole Berg Lake Trail season opens for reservations on a single morning each winter. For the 2026 season, that morning was 7am Pacific on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, and the popular July and August dates went quickly. If you missed it, the season isn't gone. Cancellations reopen dates all summer, and there are more of them than most people expect.

In the week of July 15 to 22, 2026, Schnerp counted 935 cancellation openings across the Berg Lake campgrounds, spread over 56 different arrival dates from mid-July through the September 29 season close. This guide covers how the launch works, when the next one lands, and how to catch a returned site without refreshing the page all day.

The whole season opens on one morning

Most BC Parks backcountry campgrounds open on a rolling window. Berg Lake doesn't. BC Parks releases the entire peak season in one go, on an opening day announced each year, at 7am Pacific. That's why the trail feels impossible to book: there's no daily drip of new inventory to catch, just one launch and then cancellations.

The 2026 season launched on December 2, 2025. The date drifts from year to year. It was April in 2025, the year the trail reopened, and December for the 2026 season. BC Parks announces it annually rather than fixing it to a set date. The next launch, for the 2027 season, is expected in early December 2026. Treat that as an estimate until BC Parks confirms it.

How Berg Lake reservations work

All Berg Lake bookings go through the BC Parks backcountry system at camping.bcparks.ca. Select backcountry, then Berg Lake Trail. You can also book by phone at 1-800-689-9025.

The fees are low, which is part of why demand is so high:

You can reserve up to two tent pads in one booking, for a party of no more than 12 people, at least one of whom is 16 or older. Your booking is for a specific campground on a specific night, not a general trail permit. Most people string together a few nights at different campgrounds along the trail.

You don't carry a paper permit up the trail. Bring your confirmation email, printed or on your phone, to the Mount Robson visitor centre on the day you start. The rangers there swap it for a laminated permit tag.

What launch day looks like

Opening day rewards preparation. Sites at the marquee campgrounds go within minutes, so anything you do at 7:01 that you could have done the night before costs you a booking.

• Set up your account beforehand. Don't be entering a new password at 6:58am.
• Know your dates and campgrounds. Have a first choice and two backups written down. The system moves fast and hesitation loses spots.
• Watch for the second wave. BC Parks holds a site in your cart for about 15 minutes while you complete the booking. A lot of people grab sites they aren't sure about, then let the hold expire. That means a fresh batch of availability tends to reappear 15 to 20 minutes after launch. If you strike out at 7:00, keep checking until about 7:30.

When cancellations actually happen

This is the part most guides skip. Getting shut out on launch day is not the end, because BC Parks backcountry bookings are cheap and easy to cancel, so people cancel often.

Across that week in July 2026, the 935 openings Schnerp saw weren't one big drop. They were a steady daily trickle: a few sites here, a few there, all day long, as plans changed and weather forecasts shifted. The openings covered arrival dates all the way to the September 29 close, so a cancellation for almost any remaining summer date showed up at some point during the week.

The catch is speed. When someone cancels, the site goes straight back into the booking system for whoever finds it first. There's no waitlist and no notification. Popular campgrounds like Berg Lake itself get taken again quickly, so the openings that last are the ones nobody is watching for at that exact minute.

That makes Berg Lake a bad trail to check once a day and a good one to have watched for you.

The trail at a glance

The Berg Lake Trail runs 23 km from the Mount Robson parking lot to the base of Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. It passes the milky turquoise of Berg Lake and the Berg Glacier that calves into it. There are seven backcountry campgrounds along the way, from Kinney Lake near the start to Berg Lake and Robson Pass at the top.

Reservations are required from May 27 to September 29, 2026. Kinney Lake is the common first night; Berg Lake is the destination camp most people build a trip around. The trail reopened in 2025 after a June 2021 flood, caused by heavy rain following that summer's heat dome, washed out large sections. BC Parks rebuilt it across three phases at an estimated cost of $5 million.

Once the season launches and fills, checking the booking site by hand is a losing game. Cancellations appear at unpredictable times and get taken in minutes.
