Lucky Bay camping: School holiday strategy for Cape Le Grand

Lucky Bay at Cape Le Grand National Park has 56 campsites, kangaroos that wander onto the beach, and sand that a soil scientists' comparison ranked the whitest in Australia. The park is 50 km by sealed road from Esperance, and Esperance is a little over 700 km from Perth. During WA school holidays, Lucky Bay is hard to get. Of the few dozen Lucky Bay requests Schnerp users set up between 23 March and 8 September 2026, only 29% ever caught an opening. Half of those were sites already free when the request was set, so counting only openings that appeared later, it was 14%.

For how WA's booking system compares to other states, see our state-by-state guide to Australian camping bookings.

The campground

Lucky Bay has 56 unpowered, reverse-in campsites on compacted crushed rock. Sites are not individually allocated. You book the campground for your dates, then pick your spot from the vacant sites when you arrive.

Facilities: showers (hot water not guaranteed), flush and pit toilets, and food prep shelters with gas BBQs, dishwashing sinks and picnic tables. DBCA doesn't provide drinking water. Untreated water may be available, but supply isn't guaranteed and it needs treating before you drink it, so bring your own. No campfires. No powered sites. No dogs.

Generators are allowed 8am-1pm and 5pm-9pm only. Plan for patchy or no mobile reception at the campground, and save your booking confirmation before you leave Esperance.

Park entry is $17 per standard vehicle, paid once for the first day of a multi-night stay. DBCA's 12-month All Parks Pass ($130) covers it.

How bookings work

Lucky Bay is booked through Park Stay WA, DBCA's booking system, up to 180 days before arrival. The window rolls: the latest bookable arrival date moves forward one day at midnight AWST.

This is separate from the Ningaloo monthly release, which covers only the Cape Range, Nyinggulara and Nyinggulu coast campgrounds. Lucky Bay uses the standard WA model: first come, first served, 180 days ahead, one campsite per booking.

Camping fees are $20 per adult per night, $15 concession, $5 child (6-15), and children 5 and under are free.

School holiday strategy

In my view Lucky Bay's busy season runs October through April, with the Christmas-January summer holidays as the tightest window. WA's spring break (26 September to 11 October 2026) and autumn break (10 to 25 April 2027) are also competitive. DBCA caps stays at 14 nights if any night falls in WA school holidays, against 28 nights at other times.

The 180-day rolling window means you can calculate exactly when your target dates open. Count back 180 days from your desired arrival date. That's the day the booking appears at midnight. Set an alarm.

Here's how that works out for the next school breaks. Term 4 ends Thursday 17 December 2026, so a summer arrival on Friday 18 December opened on 21 June 2026, and the whole summer break is already bookable. For the 2027 autumn break, 10 April arrivals open on 12 October 2026. For the July 2027 winter break (from 3 July), they open on 4 January 2027. A late-September spring break arrival opens in late March.

If you miss the midnight release, check back regularly. DBCA's cancellation rules create two windows where sites reappear. A cancellation fee of one concession camper fee per night applies, except in these windows:

The grace period after booking: a booking made 3 or more days before arrival can be cancelled free for 48 hours. I'd expect campers who booked before their plans were settled to drop dates in that window.

More than 14 days before a peak-period night: after that point a cancellation fee applies (5 days for nights outside peak periods). People who held sites speculatively tend to cancel before the fee kicks in, so I'd check more often in the days before the 14-day cutoff for your dates.

About those kangaroos

DBCA puts Lucky Bay's kangaroo population at 10 to 20, mostly females and their joeys, who spend much of their time lounging on the beach and hopping around the campground. They're a real draw, not a marketing gimmick. Kangaroos are most active around dawn and dusk, so I'd look for them early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

Sightings aren't guaranteed on any given visit.

What to do if it's booked out

DBCA's booking FAQ says there's no waitlist and tells you to keep checking. Cancelled sites reappear on Park Stay WA for whoever happens to be checking, and DBCA documents no cancellation alert.

Those openings are scarce. The 29% match rate above covers every Lucky Bay request Schnerp users set up from March to early September 2026. Only 14% caught a site that came free after the request was set. It reflects how specific people's dates were as well as how full Lucky Bay is. Still, it's a reason to start watching early rather than a week out.

Schnerp monitors WA Parks bookings for Lucky Bay. You tell us your dates, and we watch for cancellations. When a site opens up, you get an alert so you can book it before someone else does.

You can set up a Lucky Bay availability request in under a minute.
