Pinnacles Hut bookings: dates, fees and cancellations

Pinnacles Hut is a popular first overnight tramp in the Coromandel: a big 80-bunk hut at the end of the Kauaeranga Kauri Trail, with the Pinnacles summit another 40 minutes beyond it. That size can be misleading. There are no bunks held back for walk-ups, so a full date really is full unless somebody changes or cancels a booking.

Bookings are open now for stays through 30 June 2027. This guide covers the current season's fees, the booking rules, and the best official places to check when the night you want has no space.

How Pinnacles Hut bookings work

Book through the DOC booking portal. You reserve a bunk, not a numbered bed. On arrival, choose any available bunk inside the hut.

The current 2026/27 booking year opened on 12 May 2026. Treat that as a date for this season, not a fixed annual rule: DOC has not announced the 2027/28 opening date yet. Its online booking page is the place to watch for the next announcement.

DOC bookings are first come, first served. You need an account, full payment, and a confirmation before the booking is complete. The booking cannot be transferred to another person. If space remains, same-day online booking is available until 8pm, but there is no walk-up allocation to fall back on.

The hut checks guests in from 2pm and asks them to leave by 9am. A resident warden manages the hut, but you still need to carry your booking confirmation.

What a bunk costs in 2026/27

Pinnacles uses seasonal and weekday pricing. The current per-person rates are:

Children aged four and under stay free. The Backcountry Hut Pass is accepted only from 1 May to 30 September. Check the Pinnacles Hut page before paying because fees can change between booking years.

The hut has gas cookers, a barbecue, solar lighting, a cold shower, a solid-fuel burner and limited water. DOC advises carrying at least three litres of water per person because the hut supply can run dry.

The walk to the hut

The Kauaeranga Kauri Trail is 6km from the road end to the hut and normally takes 2.5 to 3 hours one way. DOC grades it intermediate. The extra summit section is about 1km and 40 minutes each way, with ladders and steep drops near the top.

Heavy rain matters here. Streams can flood and the access road can become unsafe, so check the track conditions before leaving. A booking does not make a flooded crossing safe.

What to do when your date is full

There is no DOC waitlist. Start by checking the booking portal again, especially after people have had time to settle their plans. DOC's cancellation fees rise as arrival approaches, which gives booked guests a reason to release dates they cannot use.

The DOC portal also has a Create Notification option. It can email you when space becomes available. That is an alert, not a reservation, so somebody else can still book the bunk first.
