DOC hut bookings: online booking, dates and cancellations

Founder
DOC hut bookings are made online at bookings.doc.govt.nz, the Department of Conservation's booking system. Only some DOC huts take bookings: the Great Walk huts in the Great Walk season, every serviced hut (since 1 October 2026), and popular individually priced huts like Mueller Hut and Hooker Hut. Most of DOC's roughly 950 huts can't be booked at all. They're first come, first served, and you pay with a Backcountry Hut Pass or hut tickets.
DOC opens each booking year, which runs from 1 July to 30 June, in May. For 2026/27, DOC hut bookings opened at 12 noon on Tuesday 12 May 2026. DOC hadn't announced the 2027/28 opening date when I checked on 19 October 2026. Going by 2025 and 2026, I'd expect it around mid-May 2027, but that's my estimate.
Cancelling a DOC hut booking is free on the day you book and the next day, then costs 10% to 100% as your first night gets closer. DOC keeps no waitlist, so a full night only comes back when someone cancels.
Which DOC huts can you book online?
You can book a DOC hut online when its page on doc.govt.nz says "Bookings required". DOC sorts huts into categories, and the category mostly decides whether a hut takes bookings:
| Hut category | Booking? | Adult fee a night, 2026/27 | Backcountry Hut Pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Great Walk huts | In the Great Walk season (all year on some) | Set per track | Not accepted in season (all year on some) |
| Individually priced, like Mueller, Hooker, Pinnacles, Welcome Flat | The popular ones (Mueller only in summer) | $28 to $62 | Never at Mueller or Hooker; some only winter |
| Serviced huts | Yes, all since 1 October 2026 | $25 to $34 | Accepted at most |
| Standard huts | Mostly no | $15 | Accepted at most |
| Basic huts and bivvies | No | Free | Not needed |
DOC's list of bookable huts keeps growing. It moved 22 huts onto the booking system in December 2025, then added another 62 huts and campsites on 1 September and 1 October 2026. With the October batch, DOC says every serviced hut is now bookable. The majority of the network is still first come, first served.
Some huts switch with the season. Mueller Hut takes bookings for stays from 2 November 2026 to 2 May 2027. Outside those dates it's first come, first served, with a hut ticket from the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park Visitor Centre on the day you walk. Our guides to Mueller Hut, Pinnacles Hut and Welcome Flat Hut cover each hut's fees and track.
What if a DOC hut can't be booked?
A DOC hut that can't be booked runs on first come, first served. You pay before you go, with a Backcountry Hut Pass or Backcountry Hut Tickets. An adult pass costs $160 for 12 months, and an adult night at a standard hut is $15 in tickets. The pass gives you no priority for a bunk.
From 1 November 2026, you'll be able to buy Backcountry Hut Tickets on DOC's booking system instead of at a visitor centre or retailer. Paper tickets will still be accepted until 1 November 2027. DOC is clear that an online ticket "isn't a booking". It pays your hut fee but doesn't hold a bunk, so I'd carry a tent if a hut might be full. DOC's backcountry huts stay unlocked as emergency shelter for anyone who needs one.
How does booking a DOC hut work?
Booking a DOC hut takes four steps on bookings.doc.govt.nz:
- Create an account well before you need it. DOC asks for your name, address, email and phone number.
- Pick the hut, your nights and your group. Every person needs a booking, infants included.
- Pay in full by Visa or Mastercard. Pass holders enter their pass numbers, and where the hut accepts the pass the price shows as zero. Hut tickets can't pay for a booking.
- Save the confirmation email to your phone or print it. It's your proof of booking, and you may be asked to show it.
A hut booking buys you a bunk, not a particular bed: you pick from the free ones when you arrive. Check-in is from 2pm to 8:30pm and check-out is by 10am, unless the hut's own rules differ. Mueller Hut and Pouākai Hut keep no bunks for walk-ins, but you can book online on the day until 8pm if a bunk is free. Booking by phone or at a visitor centre costs an extra $10.
Turning up at a bookable hut without a booking can cost you a penalty rate: the normal fee plus a full adult fee. DOC waives that only when you're using the hut as shelter in bad weather.
When do DOC hut bookings open?
DOC hut bookings open once a year, in May, for stays from 1 July to the following 30 June. For 2026/27, DOC opened huts, lodges and sole-occupancy accommodation at 12 noon on Tuesday 12 May 2026. Great Walks opened at 9:30am on their own days, from 12 to 21 May, and a few places had dates of their own:
| Date (2026) | Time (NZST) | What opened |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday 12 May | 12 noon | Huts, lodges and sole-occupancy accommodation |
| Thursday 14 May | 12 noon | North Island campsites |
| Friday 15 May | 12 noon | South Island campsites, except Tōtaranui |
| Friday 22 May | 9:30am | Tōtaranui Campsite |
| Tuesday 16 June | 9:30am | Tiritiri Matangi Bunkhouse |
| Wednesday 5 August | 9:30am | Hooker Hut, for stays from 1 September 2026 |
Huts that join the booking system mid-year open on their own dates too. DOC's two spring batches in 2026 opened on 1 September and 1 October, each for stays from the following month.
Don't assume noon next year. In 2025, DOC opened huts at 9:30am on Tuesday 13 May. DOC hadn't announced its 2027/28 dates as of 19 October 2026. Going by the last two years, I'd expect hut bookings to open around mid-May 2027, but that's my estimate, not DOC's. DOC announced the 2026 dates in a media release on 26 March 2026.
Opening day runs a virtual queue, and DOC suggests getting online at about 11:45am for a noon opening. Our DOC booking guide explains the queue, and the Great Walks opening dates cover the Great Walk days.
How fast did Mueller Hut book out on opening day?
Mueller Hut's busiest Saturdays were gone in under half an hour on opening day, but most of the nights we watched stayed bookable for weeks. When DOC opened hut bookings at noon on 12 May 2026, a handful of Schnerp requests were watching Mueller Hut. Between them they covered 26 nights from 2 November 2026 to 7 January 2027, for groups of one to three. Schnerp first saw those nights on DOC's system 26 seconds after noon.
- Saturday 5 and Saturday 12 December had no bunk left, even for one person, within 27 minutes.
- Saturday 14 November had no room for a group of three after 35 minutes.
- All four December Friday nights stayed open for one person for between one and two months.
- November weeknights mostly still had room for three people in August: 11 of the 13 we watched.
That's one hut, 26 nights and one opening day, so treat it as a picture, not a rule. Still, if I only got one go at the queue, I'd book the Saturday first. The Friday and the weeknights can wait a few minutes.
What is DOC's hut cancellation policy?
DOC's hut cancellation policy makes cancelling free on the day you book and the next day, as long as your stay is more than two days away. After that, a hut booking costs 10% to cancel until 15 days before your first night. It's 20% from 14 to 4 days out, 30% from 3 days out and 100% on the day. Sole-occupancy huts, lodges and cabins are stricter. The fee is a share of the whole booking, counted from your first night in New Zealand time.
| When you cancel | Huts and hut-side campsites | Sole-occupancy huts, lodges, cabins |
|---|---|---|
| Day you book or the next day (stay 3+ days away) | Free | Free |
| 2 days after booking, until 15 days before arrival | 10% | 10% |
| 14 to 4 days before arrival | 20% | 100% |
| 3 days to the day before arrival | 30% | 100% |
| Day before or day of arrival, or a no-show | 100% | 100% |
DOC's terms put the day before arrival in both of the last two rows, so I'd budget for 100% that late.
You can change your dates or group from the day after you book, but not on the booking day itself. A date change has to stay within the same booking year, and DOC won't move a booking to a different hut. Bad weather that doesn't close the hut gets the normal fees. The rules change if DOC closes the hut, for example over an orange or red MetService warning for the area the day before your stay. Then you can ask within seven days for a refund of the unused nights or a date change.
To cancel, log in, select your name in the green bar, choose Other Bookings and press Cancel. The refund goes back to the card you paid with.
How do I get a bunk when a DOC hut shows full?
To get a bunk on a full night, you watch for a cancellation. DOC's hut pages say that if no availability shows online for your dates, the hut is fully booked. DOC holds no waitlist, so a cancelled bunk goes straight back on the booking system for whoever books it first.
Hut cancellations last longer than Great Walk ones. From noon on 12 May to 18 October 2026, Schnerp saw 254 cancellation openings at 25 bookable DOC huts outside the Great Walks. Of the 202 that someone took before the night, 56 (28%) went within an hour and 139 (69%) within a day. Half lasted about seven hours or more. On Great Walk huts over the same months, 62% went within an hour.
Last-minute nights matter at huts, too. At the 24 huts other than Mueller, 103 of 159 cancellation openings were for a night within the next week, 25 of them at Pouākai Hut. Mueller Hut only takes summer bookings, so its openings were mostly for nights months away. These are the huts and nights Schnerp users asked us to watch, not every DOC bunk.
What I'd do for a full night:
- Search for a smaller group as well. A night with two free bunks won't take a booking for four, so check whether part of your group could go.
- Try weeknights and Fridays. At Mueller Hut on opening day, the Saturdays went first and the Fridays lasted for weeks.
- Check on the day. Bookable huts like Mueller and Pouākai take online bookings until 8pm.
- Get an alert. Schnerp watches bookable DOC huts and messages you when a bunk opens for your dates. You still book it yourself on DOC's site.
If an alert fits, you can set up a New Zealand request.
Stop refreshing. Start camping.
Schnerp watches for cancellations across Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and alerts you the moment a spot opens up.
