New Zealand campsite and hut alerts: official options

Founder
To get an alert when a booked-out campsite or hut opens in New Zealand, you need something outside the booking system to watch it for you. The Department of Conservation (DOC) says on its online bookings page: "We do not have waiting lists for bookings for future seasons or facilities that are already booked out." DOC documents no availability alert either. When a Great Walk hut night is cancelled, it goes back on DOC's booking system for whoever books it first.
The other New Zealand systems I checked are the same. Auckland Council's regional park campgrounds, TOP 10 Holiday Parks, Hampshire Holiday Parks and Tasman Holiday Parks publish cancellation rules, but none of them describes a waitlist or an alert. So your options are to refresh the booking page yourself or to use an alert service. Schnerp, the alert service I run, watches DOC huts, campsites and Great Walks and messages you when a night opens.
This guide covers what each official system offers, how fast Great Walk cancellations go, when they tend to come back, and where Schnerp does and doesn't help.
How do I get an alert when a booked-out campsite or hut opens in New Zealand?
You get an alert for a booked-out New Zealand campsite or hut by using an alert service, because none of the main booking systems offers one of its own. Here's what each system documented when I checked on 28 September 2026:
| Booking system | Official waitlist or alert | Cancellation rule that frees up places | Booking window |
|---|---|---|---|
| DOC (Great Walks, huts, campsites) | "We do not have waiting lists"; no alert documented | Great Walk fee rises from 10% to 50% at 14 days before arrival | 2026/27 open for stays to 30 June 2027 |
| Auckland Council regional parks | None documented | Full refund until midnight two days before arrival, none after | Six months ahead; availability refreshes at midnight |
| TOP 10 Holiday Parks | None documented | 75% refund 72 hours or more before arrival, none after | Not stated in the terms |
| Hampshire Holiday Parks | None documented | High and peak season: full tariff charged within 14 days of arrival | Not stated in the terms |
| Tasman Holiday Parks (NZ) | None found | Terms page didn't load its cancellation rules when I checked | Not checked |
"None documented" means the system's own booking pages and terms say nothing about a waitlist or an alert. It doesn't mean I proved there is no such thing. For DOC, the answer is in DOC's own words.
Does DOC have a waitlist for Great Walk huts?
No. DOC does not keep a waiting list for Great Walk huts, other huts or campsites. DOC's online bookings page rules out waiting lists for future seasons and for facilities that are already booked out. Point 13 of its booking terms says it again: "No waitlists are held for future availability". DOC documents no email or text alert for when a night opens. A cancelled Great Walk night goes straight back onto the booking system, and the first person to book it gets it.
You might see claims online that DOC's booking site has a "notify me" feature. I looked for it on 28 September 2026. The Mueller Hut page on DOC's booking system showed no notification button, and no DOC page or booking term describes one. Unless DOC announces an alert, assume there isn't one you can switch on.
A few DOC facts that shape the hunt for a cancellation:
- The 2026/27 season is fully on sale. DOC's Great Walks page says bookings are open for stays to 30 June 2027. The 2026/27 Great Walk releases started on Tuesday 12 May 2026. DOC hadn't announced its 2027/28 dates when I checked on 28 September 2026.
- Not every hut is bookable. First-come, first-served backcountry huts can't be booked at all. You pay with hut tickets or a Backcountry Hut Pass, so there's nothing to watch.
- Hump Ridge is separate. The Hump Ridge Track books through the Hump Ridge Trust's own website, not DOC's system.
Our guide to DOC's booking systems covers accounts, fees and the release-day queue in detail.
How fast do Great Walk cancellations go?
Half of the DOC cancellation openings Schnerp watched in the 90 days to 28 September 2026 were taken again within an hour. Of 1,662 openings that someone took before the arrival date, 14% were gone in under five minutes, 31% in under 15 minutes, 50% in under an hour and 83% within a day.
The Milford Track is much faster than the rest:
| DOC facility (90 days to 28 Sep 2026) | Cancellation openings taken | Gone in under 5 min | Gone in under 1 hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Milford Track | 502 | 26% | 78% |
| Routeburn Track | 483 | 11% | 46% |
| Kepler Track | 276 | 8% | 38% |
| All DOC facilities Schnerp watches | 1,662 | 14% | 50% |
What these numbers are and aren't:
- Watched nights only. Schnerp only checks huts and campsites that someone has asked us to watch, so this is watched inventory, not every DOC bed.
- Cancellations, not releases. I counted openings of one to three nights at one facility in the same minute. Bulk returns, like the two overnight Kepler Track releases in September, are left out. Our Kepler Track post covers those.
- Timing is approximate. At DOC, Schnerp checks every 2 to 5 minutes, so "under five minutes" carries a few minutes of error.
- It's winter data. These are the months before the Great Walk season starts. I'd expect the pace to pick up once summer is closer.
My read of the table: on the Milford Track, an alert that reaches you within a few minutes is the difference between getting the bunk and not. On the Kepler or Routeburn you usually have longer, but a morning check of the booking site will still miss most of what came back overnight.
When do DOC cancellations come back?
Most DOC cancellation openings in winter are for summer dates months away. Of the 1,802 cancellation openings Schnerp saw at DOC in the 90 days to 28 September 2026, 1,523 (85%) were for arrival dates more than 60 days out. Only 74 were for arrivals within the next two weeks.
That means you don't need to wait until the week of your walk. If you missed out on a December Milford or Routeburn trip in May, places for those dates kept coming back through the winter, one or two at a time.
DOC's cancellation fees give a second reason to watch closer to the date. On a Great Walk, a cancellation more than 14 days before arrival costs 10% of the booking. From 14 days out the fee jumps to 50%, then 75% from three days out. I'd expect some walkers to cancel just before the 14-day mark to avoid the bigger fee, so I'd pay closer attention to your dates about 15 days before arrival. That's my inference from the fee steps, not something DOC has published.
The fee for other huts and backcountry campsites is lower: 20% from 14 days out and 30% from three days out. Our 2026/27 Great Walks opening dates post has the season dates for each track.
Should I watch Great Walk campsites as well as huts?
Yes, if you can carry a tent. Great Walk campsite nights come back too, and in Schnerp's data they lasted a little longer than hut bunks. On the Great Walks Schnerp watched in the 90 days to 28 September 2026, 53% of hut cancellation openings that someone took were gone within an hour (696 of 1,312). For campsites it was 43% (65 of 151).
Campsite openings were much rarer in that window: 162, against 1,397 for huts. These are watched nights only, and my read is that fewer Schnerp users ask us to watch campsites, not that campsites rarely come back. On the Kepler Track in September, 28 of the 35 nights that came back in a single minute were at Iris Burn Campsite.
If a hut night is what you want, add the campsite at the same stop to your watch as a fallback. You can always keep checking for the bunk after you've secured a tent site.
What about Auckland regional parks and holiday parks?
Auckland Council's regional parks and New Zealand's holiday-park chains don't document a waitlist or an alert either, so the same approach applies. Their cancellation rules are different, and that changes when places come back.
Auckland Council regional parks. The council's campgrounds, including Tāwharanui, can be booked six months ahead, and availability refreshes at midnight each day. You can cancel for a full refund (minus bank fees) up to midnight two days before your arrival date. After that, there's no refund. The council's booking pages mention no waitlist or alert.
I'd watch the three or four days before your Auckland arrival most closely. That refund deadline is when a camper who's changed plans has a reason to cancel. Our Tāwharanui guide covers the busiest summer dates.
TOP 10 Holiday Parks. TOP 10's booking terms give a 75% refund for cancellations 72 hours or more before arrival and no refund inside 72 hours. The terms say the TOP 10 group doesn't own any of the parks, and the terms and FAQ mention no waitlist. The 72-hour line is the date to watch.
Hampshire Holiday Parks. Hampshire's terms charge a $25 administration fee for cancellations up to 15 days before arrival in high and peak season. Inside 14 days, the fee is the full booking. In low and shoulder season, the full charge applies within five days of arrival. The terms mention no waitlist.
Tasman Holiday Parks. I found no waitlist or alert on Tasman Holiday Parks' website, but I couldn't read its New Zealand cancellation terms, so check them before you book.
The two Hot Water Beaches show how different these systems are. One is a DOC campsite at Lake Tarawera, the other a TOP 10 park on the Coromandel. Our Hot Water Beach post explains how each one books.
Where Schnerp fits, and where it doesn't
Schnerp watches New Zealand huts, campsites and holiday parks and messages you when a night you want opens. You still book it yourself on the official site. In New Zealand, Schnerp covers DOC (Great Walks, bookable huts and campsites), Auckland Council regional parks, TOP 10 Holiday Parks, Tasman Holiday Parks, Hampshire Holiday Parks and Timber Trail Lodge.
| Schnerp plan (September 2026) | Price | Active requests | Alert channels | Checks at DOC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free trial | $0 | 1 | Email only, 10 notifications | Every 5 minutes |
| Basic | NZ$15 a month | 3 | Email and text | Every 5 minutes |
| Priority | NZ$29 a month | 7 | Email, text, WhatsApp and push | Every 2 minutes |
Schnerp is a good fit when:
- You want huts and campsites in one place. One account can watch a Milford Track hut, a DOC beach campsite and an Auckland regional park campground at the same time. Each booking system otherwise leaves you checking its own site.
- You want a text or push alert. Half of the DOC cancellation openings we watched were gone within an hour, and a quarter of Milford Track openings in under five minutes. A text reaches most people sooner than an email.
- You're watching a whole track. One Schnerp request can cover several huts on a Great Walk for your dates, so you hear about a night at any of them.
Schnerp is not the right tool when:
- The hut is first-come, first-served. There's no booking to watch. Carry hut tickets or a Backcountry Hut Pass.
- You're walking the Hump Ridge Track. It books through the Hump Ridge Trust, and Schnerp doesn't watch it.
- You want it booked for you. Schnerp never books or holds a bunk. You finish the booking on DOC's site, so be signed in and ready.
If Schnerp fits what you're after, you can set up a New Zealand request in about a minute. The free trial covers one request, which is enough to see how the alerts work on one track or campground.
Tips that matter more than the alert
An alert only tells you something is free. These habits decide whether you get it:
- Stay signed in to DOC. DOC says a forgotten password is one of the main reasons people miss out on bookings. Sign in on your phone before you need it.
- Know every walker's details. A Great Walk booking needs each person's name, age, gender and country of citizenship or residence. Have them saved somewhere you can copy from.
- Be flexible on direction. The Routeburn Track can be walked in either direction, so the hut you need on each night changes with your starting end. Our Routeburn Track guide and Milford Track guide go through each track's huts.
- Look beyond the Great Walks. Bookable huts like Mueller Hut book out too, and the same no-waitlist rule applies.
Our DOC hut bookings guide explains which huts take bookings and how DOC's hut cancellation fees work.
For a trip across the Tasman, our Australia campsite cancellation alerts guide covers the official options in each state.
If you're planning a trip in Canada, the same questions have different answers there: several Canadian park systems do have their own alerts. Our Canada campsite cancellation alerts guide covers them.
Stop refreshing. Start camping.
Schnerp watches for cancellations across Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and alerts you the moment a spot opens up.
