Kepler Track bookings: when hut spots come back

Daniel Thareja

Founder

Kepler Track hut and campsite bookings for the 2026/27 Great Walk season opened on Tuesday 19 May 2026, and the season runs from 27 October 2026 to 30 April 2027. If your dates showed as full, they may not stay full. Between midday 20 May and midday 23 September 2026 (NZ time), Schnerp saw 733 Kepler Track hut and campsite nights come back onto DOC's booking system.

Just over half of those nights came back one to three at a time. Twice in mid-September, dozens came back in the same minute, in the middle of the night. They didn't last long: 43% of the returned nights that closed were gone within an hour. So the practical answer is to have something watching for you, not to refresh the DOC site by hand.

When did Kepler Track bookings open for 2026/27?

Kepler Track bookings for 2026/27 opened at 9:30am on Tuesday 19 May 2026, according to DOC's 26 March 2026 media release. DOC staggered the Great Walks over several days from 12 May, with a virtual queue on each opening morning. Our full 2026-27 opening schedule has every track's date.

The same release put the Kepler Track at 91% hut occupancy for the 2025/26 season, just behind the Milford Track and Abel Tasman Coast Track at around 95%. That's high, but it isn't the Milford. Kepler places keep moving after opening day, and that's what the rest of this post is about.

Everything from here is first-come first-served. DOC's online bookings page says it does not keep waiting lists for facilities that are already booked out.

What Schnerp saw on 14 and 15 September 2026

Schnerp watched two overnight releases of Kepler Track nights in mid-September 2026. Both happened after 1am New Zealand time.

When (NZST)Nights back in one minuteWhereArrival dates
2:25am, Monday 14 Sep 202656Luxmore Hut 24, Iris Burn Hut 19, Moturau Hut 9, Iris Burn Campsite 427 Oct to 27 Nov 2026
1:05am, Tuesday 15 Sep 202635Iris Burn Campsite 28, Iris Burn Hut 79 Nov to 11 Dec 2026

The first release started on 27 October, the opening night of the Great Walk season. It covered all three huts across a month of arrivals. The second was mostly Iris Burn Campsite nights through November and into December.

I don't know why these nights came back when they did. It could have been a group booking released, inventory DOC was holding, or a batch of cancellations processed together. DOC hasn't said, and I'm not going to guess. Neither release lines up with a DOC cancellation-fee deadline, because the arrival dates were six weeks or more away.

These counts are only the nights Schnerp users were watching at the time. The real number of beds that came back could be higher.

How often do Kepler Track cancellations come up?

Kepler Track nights came back on 99 of the 126 days from midday 20 May to midday 23 September 2026 (NZ time). Over that window Schnerp saw 733 hut and campsite nights reappear, for arrival dates from 27 October 2026 to April 2027.

Period (2026)Nights that came back
20 to 31 May57
June92
July130
August176
1 to 23 September278

The count rose each month. Part of that is more people watching as the season gets closer, so I wouldn't read it as DOC releasing more. What it does show is that the Kepler is not a one-shot booking. Places come back through the winter and spring.

Speed matters more than volume. Of the 664 returned nights that were booked again before their arrival date, 284 (43%) were gone within an hour, and 154 (23%) were gone within 10 minutes. Luxmore Hut went quickest: 96 of 204 returned Luxmore nights (47%) were rebooked within an hour.

How DOC's cancellation fees shape when places come back

DOC's cancellation fees for Great Walk huts and campsites step up as the arrival date gets closer. The fees below are from DOC's booking terms and conditions and apply when the whole booking is cancelled.

When you cancel a Great Walk bookingFee
The day you book, or the next day (if 2+ days out)0%
48 hours after booking and 15 or more days before arrival10%
14 to 4 days before arrival50%
3 days to the day before arrival75%
The day before, the day of, or after arrival100%

The jump from 10% to 50% at 14 days out is the one I'd plan around. Someone holding a Kepler booking "just in case" has a reason to cancel before that line. If you're after a specific date, I'd check more often in the week before it hits 14 days out.

DOC also charges a $10 fee for a change that lowers the value of a booking. Bookings can't be moved to a different hut or campsite. Cancelling is self-service in your DOC booking account. With no waitlist, a cancelled night goes to whoever finds it first.

Which Kepler Track huts and campsites should you watch?

Watch every Kepler Track hut and campsite that fits your plan, not just the huts. The Kepler has three huts and two campsites, and DOC books each night separately. Most people walk it in 4 days and 3 nights.

  • Luxmore Hut (54 bunks) is a 45-minute walk above the bushline, 13.8 km from the Kepler Track car park. It came back most often in Schnerp's data, 213 nights, and went fastest.
  • Iris Burn Hut (50 bunks) sits in a tussock clearing and is the second night on the usual 4-day walk. Schnerp saw 204 nights come back.
  • Moturau Hut (40 bunks) is beside Lake Manapouri. Schnerp saw 176 nights come back.
  • Iris Burn Campsite and Brod Bay Campsite have 15 tent sites each. Iris Burn Campsite produced 117 returned nights, including 28 in the 15 September release.

If you're willing to carry a tent, a campsite night can get a trip over the line when a hut is full. Campsite nights cost less too. The loop also has a second exit at Rainbow Reach, 12 km from Te Anau, which shuttles serve in the Great Walk season.

Kepler Track fees and season at a glance

Kepler Track fees for the Great Walk season are per person, per night, and DOC charges international visitors more than New Zealanders. These are the Great Walk season rates on DOC's Kepler Track page, as listed in September 2026.

Kepler Track, 27 Oct 2026 to 30 Apr 2027NZ adultInternational adultNZ child (5 to 17)International child
Huts (Luxmore, Iris Burn, Moturau)$88$132$44$66
Campsites (Brod Bay, Iris Burn)$28$42$14$21

New Zealand infants aged 0 to 4 stay free, and DOC asks for proof of eligibility for the New Zealand rate. The track is a 60 km loop that starts at the Kepler Track car park, 5 km from Te Anau.

Outside the Great Walk season, from 1 May to 26 October, the Kepler doesn't run as a Great Walk. Only Luxmore Hut needs a booking then, and DOC warns of frequent avalanches. DOC says avalanche risk can extend into December. In the Great Walk season it may close the alpine section between Luxmore Hut and Iris Burn Hut.

Getting an alert for Kepler Track cancellations

DOC doesn't keep a waitlist for the Kepler Track, and it documents no alert for returned nights. Checking the DOC booking system yourself works if you're lucky with timing. The September releases landed at 1am and 2:25am, and more than 4 in 10 returned nights went within an hour.

Schnerp watches the Kepler Track for the huts, campsites, and dates you pick. When a matching night opens, you get an alert with a link to book it. It's the same approach we use on the Milford Track and the Routeburn Track.

For how DOC's booking system works across huts, campsites, and lodges, see our DOC booking systems guide.
