NZ Great Walks 2026-27: Every opening date

DOC opened Great Walk hut and campsite bookings for the 2026-27 season across 10 days in May 2026, from 12 to 21 May. Each walk had its own booking day. DOC hasn't announced the 2027-28 dates yet (as of 23 September 2026).

The complete 2026-27 booking schedule

All Great Walk bookings opened at 9:30 AM NZT. These are for stays from 1 July 2026 through 30 June 2027.

The Hump Ridge Track, DOC's 11th Great Walk since October 2024, isn't on this list. It's a 61.5 km loop in southern Fiordland, and its bookings are managed separately by the Hump Ridge Trust, up to two years in advance.

Non-Great Walk DOC accommodation opened separately:

DOC confirmed this schedule in their March 2026 media release. The release only said "9:30 am or 12 noon"; DOC's online bookings page listed the time for each date.

We'll send you a heads-up before your track's booking day opens, plus tips for landing a spot.

How the DOC booking system works

All Great Walk bookings go through DOC's online booking system. On each walk's opening day, DOC uses a virtual queue.

The lobby opens before 9:30 AM. DOC recommends joining around 9:15. Everyone in the lobby at 9:30 is assigned a random position. This is a raffle, not a race. Whether you join at 9:00 or 9:25, your odds are the same. After 9:30, latecomers go to the back.

Once the queue starts moving, don't refresh your browser. I'd treat a refresh as a risk to your place, and DOC warns that losing your connection partway through a booking often loses the booking.

Places start coming back soon after opening. DOC says group members who made duplicate bookings drop the extras, particularly in the first 25 minutes. If your dates are gone on first look, keep watching. For the broader playbook, see our opening day booking queue tips. It covers the multi-browser tactic, what to do at the front of the queue, and how the same mechanics apply on Parks Canada and Parks Victoria.

What to prepare before booking day

  • Register a DOC account now. Don't wait until May.
  • Walk through the booking flow on DOC's site before opening day. Each walk has its own rules, like the Milford's fixed hut order, so read its DOC page too.
  • Pick 3-4 date ranges. If your first choice is gone, switch immediately.
  • Have everyone's details ready. Full names, ages, nationalities, and a credit card.
  • Try multiple devices. I'd expect each device to join the lobby as its own entry and get its own random position.
  • If you're booking more than one walk, plan your strategy. The Milford Track opened on 13 May, the Routeburn on 15 May. You can't do both in a single queue session.

Every Great Walk at a glance

Paparoa Track: bookings opened on 12 May

A memorial to the 29 men who died in the Pike River Mine explosion on 19 November 2010. The Paparoa was the first Great Walk to open for 2026-27 bookings. It's no longer the newest Great Walk: the Hump Ridge Track joined in October 2024.

DOC Paparoa Track page

Milford Track: bookings opened on 13 May

The hardest Great Walk to book. DOC says it sold out in 34 minutes in May 2026, and hut occupancy was around 95% in 2025-26. For a full booking guide, see our Milford Track 2026 post.

On the Milford, huts must be booked consecutively. You pick your start date at Clinton Hut, and the system assigns Mintaro and Dumpling for the next two nights. No flexibility on hut order or direction. Transport to Glade Wharf and from Sandfly Point must be booked separately.

DOC Milford Track page

Abel Tasman Coast Track: bookings opened on 14 May

A coastal Great Walk that needs bookings year-round, like the Heaphy, Paparoa, Rakiura and Lake Waikaremoana tracks. Hut occupancy was around 95% in 2025-26.

The most flexible Great Walk. Water taxis let you start, finish, or skip sections at multiple bays. You can kayak sections instead of walking. Maximum stay is 2 nights per site in peak season (Oct-Apr), 5 nights in winter.

Totaranui Campsite, the large DOC campground at the northern end, had its own booking date: 22 May 2026 at 9:30 AM.

DOC Abel Tasman page

Routeburn Track: bookings opened on 15 May

A 33 km alpine crossing between Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks. For a full booking guide, see our Routeburn Track post.

Unlike the Milford, you choose your own huts on the Routeburn. Most trampers book 2 nights: Falls and Lake Mackenzie. You can walk either direction.

DOC Routeburn Track page

Kepler Track: bookings opened on 19 May

A 60 km loop that starts and ends near Te Anau. It's one of two loop-format Great Walks in Fiordland, with the Hump Ridge Track. Hut occupancy was 91% in 2025-26.

Our Kepler Track bookings guide covers when Kepler nights came back after opening day and how fast they went.

Length60 km (loop)

Climbs above the bushline to Luxmore Hut, then along a ridge below Mount Luxmore with views of Lake Te Anau and the surrounding ranges. Because it's a loop, you can walk back to the car park. Many people finish at Rainbow Reach instead, 12 km from Te Anau, and take a shuttle.

DOC Kepler Track page

Heaphy Track: bookings opened on 20 May

At 78.4 km, the longest of the walking Great Walks (the Whanganui Journey paddle is longer). Crosses Kahurangi National Park from Golden Bay to the Heaphy coast. Bookings grew in 2025-26 after storm recovery finished.

Length78.4 km (point-to-point)
Duration4-6 days

Campsites9 campsites
SeasonYear-round booking required
Hut fees (2026-27)NZ$44/night (NZ), NZ$66/night (intl)

Mountain bikers can ride the Heaphy from 1 May to 30 November. Walkers use the track year-round, so expect bikes on it in those months.

DOC Heaphy Track page

Whanganui Journey: bookings opened on 20 May

The only Great Walk that isn't a walk. The Whanganui Journey is a 3-5 day canoe or kayak trip down the Whanganui River.

Length88 km (short route) or 145 km (full route)
Duration3 days (short) or 5 days (full)
HutsJohn Coull Hut, Tieke Kainga (a functioning Maori marae)
Campsites10 campsites along the river
Season1 October – 30 April
Hut fees (2026-27)NZ$35/night (same for NZ and international)

Most paddlers hire canoes, barrels, and safety gear as a package from suppliers in the towns near the access points, such as Taumarunui. You don't need a guide, but DOC says going without one suits people with canoeing experience. Tieke Kainga is a functioning marae as well as a hut.

DOC Whanganui Journey page

Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk: bookings opened on 20 May

A 46 km one-way track through Te Urewera, the first natural feature recognised in New Zealand law as a legal entity in its own right (not a national park). DOC describes it as more of a backcountry, off the beaten track experience. Bookings grew in 2025-26 after storm recovery.

Length46 km (one-way)
Duration3-4 days
Huts4 huts (Panekire, Waiopaoa, Marauiti, Waiharuru)
Campsites5 campsites
SeasonYear-round booking required
Hut fees (2026-27)NZ$35/night (same for NZ and international)

Whanganui Hut is closed. You need transport at both ends, which are about 30 km apart. Water taxi and shuttle services run to both ends, and DOC says the water taxi usually runs October through April.

DOC Lake Waikaremoana page

Tongariro Northern Circuit: bookings opened on 21 May

A loop through active volcanic terrain around Mount Ngauruhoe. Includes part of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing as one segment.

Length44.9 km (loop); 35.5 km one way until mid-Dec
Duration3-4 days / 3 nights
HutsMangatepopo (20), new Oturere (28), Waihohonu (28)
CampsitesAdjacent to each hut
Season23 October – 30 April
Hut fees (2026-27)NZ$44/night (NZ), NZ$66/night (intl)

Note: The Tongariro Northern Circuit didn't operate as a Great Walk in 2025-26 while DOC replaced Oturere Hut. It's back for 2026-27, but weather delayed the build. DOC's 4 September 2026 update says the new Oturere Hut and campsite open for bookings from 18 December 2026, and until then there's no accommodation between Mangatepopo Hut and Waihohonu Hut. DOC is emailing people with affected bookings to offer a date change or a full refund. The fire-damaged Mangatepopo Track is due to reopen in mid-December, which makes the circuit a full loop again.

DOC Tongariro Northern Circuit page

Rakiura Track: bookings opened on 21 May

New Zealand's southernmost Great Walk, on Stewart Island/Rakiura. DOC says there are many kiwi on Stewart Island, so listen for Rakiura tokoeka calling at night.

Length32 km (loop)
Duration3 days / 2 nights
HutsPort William (24), North Arm (24)
CampsitesMaori Beach, Port William, North Arm
SeasonYear-round booking required
Hut fees (2026-27)NZ$44/night (NZ), NZ$66/night (intl)

Getting there: ferry from Bluff (about 1 hour) or flight from Invercargill (about 20 min).

DOC Rakiura Track page

Mueller Hut is not a Great Walk, but it's one of DOC's most popular bookable huts. It opened with the general huts release on 12 May 2026, not with the Great Walks. See our Mueller Hut booking guide.

Which tracks sell out and which don't

Not every Great Walk sells out on opening day. Here's how fast each track books up:

Sells out in minutes: Milford Track. It sold out in 34 minutes in May 2026, with around 95% hut occupancy in 2025-26. Popular dates gone almost instantly.

Sells out in hours to days: Routeburn Track, Abel Tasman Coast Track. The Abel Tasman hit around 95% hut occupancy in 2025-26. On its 2026 opening day the Routeburn drew 13,100 users at peak, nearly as many as the Milford. Peak-season dates go fast, but shoulder season (March-April) lasts longer.

Sells out in days to weeks: Kepler Track. 91% occupancy. Popular dates go fast, but the 60 km / 3-4 day commitment narrows the audience.

Rarely sells out: Heaphy Track, Whanganui Journey, Lake Waikaremoana, Tongariro Northern Circuit, Rakiura Track. Lower demand relative to capacity. You'll likely get your preferred dates even booking a few days after opening. Heaphy and Waikaremoana grew in 2025-26, so this may shift.

I wouldn't count on the Paparoa Track the same way. Its huts have 16 to 20 bunks each, and DOC says people ask it to add huts on the Paparoa and Milford tracks in particular.

If your top choice is the Milford or Routeburn, treat booking day like a competition. For the rest, you have more breathing room.

What to do if you miss out

"Sold out" on opening day is not the end. Cancellations happen throughout the season, and in my experience DOC's refund fees give them a rough rhythm.

Trampers can cancel on the day they book or the next day with no fee, as long as the trip is more than 2 days away. After 48 hours, the fees escalate: 10% if cancelling 15+ days before arrival, 50% at 14-4 days, 75% from 3 days out, and no refund from the day before arrival.

This creates two cancellation windows. The first is right after bookings open. DOC says group members who made duplicate bookings drop the extras, particularly in the first 25 minutes. The second is around each penalty threshold, when trampers who held bookings "just in case" decide whether the fee is worth it.

DOC has no waitlist. Cancelled hut nights reappear on DOC's booking system for whoever happens to be checking. DOC documents no alert for returned nights.

Schnerp monitors the DOC booking system for Great Walk cancellations. Pick your track and dates, and we watch for openings. When a hut night opens up, you get an alert so you can book it before someone else does.

You can set up a Great Walk availability request in under a minute.
