Milford Track 2026: Booking dates and how to get a spot

Milford Track hut bookings for the 2026-27 season opened on Wednesday 13 May 2026 at 9:30 AM. All hut spaces for the entire tramping season were released at once, and DOC says the track sold out in 34 minutes.

DOC hasn't announced the 2027-28 opening date yet (as of 23 September 2026). It announced the 2025-26 dates on 18 February 2025 and the 2026-27 dates on 26 March 2026, and bookings opened in May both years.

When did Milford Track bookings open?

DOC staggers Great Walk bookings across several days each May. For the 2026-27 season, the schedule started on Tuesday 12 May with general huts and lodges and the Paparoa Track, followed by the other Great Walks on their own days.

Milford Track opened on Wednesday 13 May at 9:30 AM. The Routeburn Track followed two days later on Friday 15 May at 9:30 AM. This staggered approach lets trampers planning multiple tracks focus on one booking at a time.

The Milford Track's 2026-27 Great Walk season runs from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, with the last departure on 28 April 2027. Every hut night for the entire season went live at the same moment, and DOC announced no rolling release or second wave. If your dates are gone, watch for them to come back: after the 2026 opening, DOC told people to "regularly check for cancellations and additional availability".

DOC confirmed these dates in its 26 March 2026 media release.

How the DOC booking system works

All Milford Track bookings go through DOC's online booking system. On opening day, DOC uses a virtual queue to manage demand. It has used the queue since the 2025 openings.

The lobby opens before 9:30 AM. At 9:30, everyone in the lobby is assigned a random position in the queue. This is not first-come-first-served. Whether you join at 9:00 or 9:25, your position is randomised. DOC suggests logging in around 9:15, and anyone who joins after 9:30 goes to the back.

Once the queue starts moving, don't refresh your browser. I'd treat a refresh as a risk to your place, and DOC warns that losing your connection partway through a booking often loses the booking.

When you reach the front, you book 3 consecutive hut nights: Clinton Hut, Mintaro Hut, and Dumpling Hut. You can't pick individual huts or skip nights. Each hut has 40 bunks, so about 40 independent trampers can start the track each day.

In 2024, DOC's booking system struggled for the first hour of Milford opening day. In May 2026 the queue held up: DOC says 13,500 users were online at the peak. Have a backup plan anyway.

What to prepare before booking day

• Register a DOC account now. Don't wait until booking day. Create your account and log in at least once to make sure your password works.
• Do a practice run. Walk through the booking flow on DOC's site before opening day. Know where the date picker is, what fields you need, and how checkout works.
• Pick 3-4 date ranges. If your first choice is gone by the time you reach the front of the queue, switch to your backup dates immediately. Hesitation costs you.
• Have everyone's details ready. Full names of all group members and a credit card. The booking form requires this information upfront.
• Try multiple browsers and devices. Open the booking page on your laptop and your phone. Each device joins the lobby as its own entry, so I'd expect each to get its own random position. What does it cost?

The Milford Track requires three hut nights. For the 2026-27 Great Walk season (1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027), DOC charges NZ$106 per person per night for New Zealand adults and NZ$152 per person per night for international adults. That's NZ$318 or NZ$456 total for the 3-night walk.

Children aged 5 to 17 pay NZ$53 a night at the New Zealand rate, and international children pay NZ$76. The full fee table is on DOC's Milford Track page.

Transport to and from the track is separate. Book it directly with a transport provider after you've secured your hut booking.

What happens when it sells out

The Milford Track sells out on opening day. In 2022, all 7,480 spots were reserved within three minutes. In 2026, the track sold out in 34 minutes.

But selling out on day one is not the end. Cancellations happen throughout the season. People's plans change, flights get cancelled, group sizes shift. Some churn also happens right after opening. DOC says group members who made duplicate bookings drop the extras, particularly in the first 25 minutes.

When someone cancels, those hut nights reappear on bookings.doc.govt.nz. DOC doesn't keep a waiting list, and it documents no alert for returned spots. Cancelled bookings go to whoever happens to be checking.

Checking the DOC site every day for months isn't realistic.
