The Wilsons Prom summer ballot is gone: how to book now

If you're searching for the Wilsons Prom summer ballot, here's the short answer: there isn't one anymore. Parks Victoria's own FAQ answers the ballot question with a flat "No". Peak season is now managed through the quarterly bookings release program. Summer at Tidal River is first in, first served, released in one scheduled drop.

That change catches a lot of people out. The ballot ran for years, and the booking site still carries a stale page from the 2022-23 ballot, so searches keep landing on a system that no longer exists. This post covers what replaced it, what this year's summer release actually looked like from the inside, and what to do if you missed it.

what happened to the summer ballot

Under the old system, you applied for peak-period sites at Tidal River and a random computer draw decided who got them. That draw is gone. The last ballot the booking site mentions is the 2022-23 summer.

The randomness didn't disappear, though. It moved. Parks Victoria now manages peak demand with a "Lobby" and virtual waiting room on release day, and your queue position is randomly assigned. In the same change, the maximum number of campsites per transaction was cut from 10 to 3 to spread sites across more people. So the fairness mechanism survived; what changed is when you compete. Instead of a ballot window weeks ahead, everything comes down to one release morning.

how the quarterly release works

Parks Victoria releases campground bookings four times a year, roughly 6 to 9 months ahead of the stay dates. Each release is staggered over three days, and Tidal River gets the first day to itself, which tells you everything about demand:

• Day 1 (Monday): Tidal River campground only
• Day 2 (Tuesday): roofed accommodation across the state
• Day 3 (Wednesday): every other bookable campground

On release morning, the booking site opens a Lobby before 10am AEST. It's not a queue. There's no advantage to arriving early; you just need to be in the Lobby before 10. At 10am the system randomly moves people from the Lobby into the virtual waiting room, where you can see your queue number and approximate wait. Arrive after 10am and you join the back of the line behind everyone who was randomly placed. Summer at Tidal River also comes with strict stay rules. For the 2026-27 peak season, campsites run on 7-night minimum and 14-night maximum stays between Sunday 20 December and Sunday 24 January, with arrivals and departures on Sundays only. Cabins and lodges run the same way on their own weekdays. Outside the deep summer window, normal rules apply, and other holiday peaks carry their own minimums (4 nights at Easter, 3 nights on the Labour Day weekend).

The campground itself is worth the fight: around 480 camping and caravan sites (Parks Victoria cites 484 on its website and 475 in its camping guide), only 20 of them powered. It's the most competitive booking in Victoria, and camping fees are half price until July 2027 under a state government program, which has only pushed demand higher.

what the july release actually looked like

The 2026 summer release happened on Monday 6 July at 10am, covering stays from 18 December 2026 to 28 February 2027. It was originally slated for early June and slipped to July, which is a useful lesson in itself: never trust a Parks Victoria release date until the schedule page confirms it close to the day. Other parks can carry their own stay restrictions; Banksia Bluff at Cape Conran, for example, uses seven-night Saturday-turn blocks over Christmas.

We watched it happen from the inside. One minute later, the calendar was a wall of green. Within a few hours, the popular summer weeks were largely gone.

That's the shape of the new system. There's no application window and no draw notification date. The whole summer goes live in one morning, and the Lobby decides who gets through first.

Bookings from that release are still open now, covering stays through 28 February 2027, so it's worth checking the booking site for leftover dates, especially midweek stays outside the deep peak.

missed out? cancellations are the second release

Here's what most people don't realise: Parks Victoria's refund tiers create predictable waves of returned sites.

• 100% refund if you cancel 30 days or more before your trip
• 50% refund at 8 to 29 days out
• No refund inside 8 days

That first threshold does a lot of work. People who booked speculatively on release morning, grabbed more nights than they need, or can't get leave sorted tend to cancel just before their 100% refund window closes. For a stay starting 20 December, that means cancellations cluster through mid-to-late November. A smaller wave lands before the 8-day mark, when a half refund beats nothing.

Cancelled sites go straight back into the booking system for whoever finds them first. There's no waitlist and no notification from Parks Victoria.

when is the next release?

Parks Victoria hasn't published the next release date yet. The schedule page currently shows only the open summer window, and points people at its Outdoor Inspiration newsletter for future dates. Based on the 6-to-9-months-ahead pattern, the next drop should cover autumn 2027 stays, but treat any date as unconfirmed until the schedule page says so.
