A Message from Our Founder: Alberta Parks Update
Daniel Thareja
Founder
Since 2022, Schnerp has helped campers across Canada discover last-minute campsite openings. What started as a small project for me and my friends in Canmore has grown into a tool thousands of you use every year to save trips, salvage long weekends, and get outdoors. For that, I’m deeply grateful.
Today, I need to share some unfortunate news about our integration with Alberta Parks.
What happened
Alberta Parks has recently made policy changes that affect how third-party services like Schnerp can interact with their reservation system. As a result, I’ve stopped scanning Alberta Parks for cancellations until further notice.
This decision only affects Alberta Parks. All other parks (including Parks Canada, BC Parks, and all other provinces) remain fully available.
What this means for you
- All Alberta Parks requests have been cancelled. You won’t be able to create a new one until further notice.
- Other parks are unaffected. Parks Canada, BC Parks, and all other provinces continue to work as normal.
- If you are a paid subscriber:
- Only watching Alberta Parks, you should have received an email offering a refund or account credit.
- Watching Alberta Parks and other parks, you should have received an email with details on a bonus credit we’ve added to your account.
If you didn’t see an email and think you should have, please email help@schnerp.com and I’ll get you sorted right away.
Share your experience
Alberta Parks mentioned they offer their own availability notifications through their website. While built-in tools may work for some, many of you have told me Schnerp fills important gaps, like text messages, flexible date ranges, and backcountry permits.
I’d love to hear how you’ve been using Schnerp, and whether you’ve tried any of the built-in notification tools that park systems provide.
Your feedback helps me understand where Schnerp makes the biggest difference, and how I can keep improving the service for the camping community.
What’s next
I’m working to resolve this issue directly with Alberta Parks, together with my legal team, and will provide an update in the coming weeks. My hope is to find a constructive path forward for all of us involved.
Thank you for being part of this journey thus far 🙏
