Ningaloo camping: How the monthly drop system works

Ningaloo Coast camping bookings changed in 2026. Instead of releasing one new arrival date at midnight each day, Park Stay WA now advances the latest bookable departure in a block on the first Tuesday of the month.

The next release is confirmed for 10am AWST on Tuesday 4 August 2026. It covers stays from 1 to 25 February 2027. That uneven range is deliberate: DBCA adjusts each block so weekends and school or public holidays stay together.

The next Ningaloo release dates

DBCA started the fairer-access trial on 3 February 2026. It remains a trial as of July, but it has been extended into the lower-demand season.

The next two confirmed releases are:

Book through Park Stay WA. Do not search the Explore Parks information pages expecting to complete checkout there.

These are not releases of neat calendar months, and “six months ahead” is only a rough description. The official July trial FAQ is the reliable source for each block's exact dates.

How the 10am queue works

The Park Stay queue is part of the release, so the old refresh-at-midnight tactic no longer applies.

• A queue position obtained before 10am is cleared at 10am.
• Everyone present at 10am receives a new random position.
• Queue capacity is limited.
• Do not refresh or use several tabs, browsers or devices.
• Once admitted, you have a 30-minute booking session.
• One booking covers one campsite. Do not hold several bookings for the same night.

Log in before release morning, choose your preferred campground and dates, and prepare backups. A random position means arriving very early does not improve your place.

The Ningaloo queue can also disrupt ordinary Park Stay bookings elsewhere in WA on the first Tuesday. Outside Ningaloo, the standard system still makes the latest arrival date bookable 180 days ahead. A departure can extend another 28 days, or 14 days if any stay date overlaps a WA school holiday.

Which campgrounds are included

The trial names 26 Parks and Wildlife Service-managed campgrounds across three management areas:

Cape Range National Park, 10: Osprey Bay, Mesa, Tulki Beach, Kurrajong, Neds, North Mandu, Bungarra, Boat Harbour, One K and Yardie Creek.

Nyinggulara National Park, 5: South Lefroy Bay, Winderabandi, Janes Bay, Point Billie and North Lefroy.

Warroora Coast, 11: 14 Mile, Amherst Point, Black Moon Cliff, Elles Beach, Lagoon, Maggies, Nicks Camp, Sandy Point, Stans Camp, Stevens Camp and The Ridge.

Inclusion in the trial does not mean every campground will have inventory in every release. Current closures matter:

• All five Nyinggulara campgrounds remain closed after Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle and have no reopening timetable.
• Sites 12-28 at 14 Mile remain closed, and the whole campground is scheduled to close for works from 29 October 2026.
• North Mandu and Tulki Beach close for the low-demand season from 1 November; the July FAQ gives no reopening date.
• Boat Harbour and One K remained inaccessible in the July update and were not expected to reopen before 1 August.

Comparing the campground options

The official pages list 46 campsites at Osprey Bay, 23 at Mesa, 11 at Tulki Beach and 35 at Kurrajong. Those counts help you compare scale, but DBCA does not publish a current fastest-to-sell-out ranking. Pick backups based on fit, not a made-up league table.

Osprey Bay camping currently costs $15 per adult, $10 per concession holder and $5 per child each night. Cape Range vehicle entry is $17 for a standard vehicle, paid on the first day of a camping stay rather than every day.

Warroora is more basic. Its 11 campgrounds have no toilets, so every group must carry an approved portable self-contained toilet. Park entry is free, but camping fees still apply.

Campfire rules vary. Osprey Bay, Mesa, Tulki Beach and Kurrajong prohibit campfires at all times, so do not assume a Cape Range campsite comes with a usable fire ring.

Whale sharks are commonly present from April to July. That is one reason winter travel is popular, but DBCA's cancellation “peak period” is campground-specific and should not be reduced to one Ningaloo-wide date range.

What to do if your dates are full

DBCA has no waitlist. A cancelled campsite returns to Park Stay WA for whoever completes the next booking.

Cancellation timing is more detailed than a simple 14-day rule:

• For bookings made at least three days before arrival, the fee-free grace period lasts 48 hours.
• For bookings made one or two days before arrival, grace ends at 11.59pm the day before arrival.
• Same-day bookings have no grace period.
• After grace expires, the cancellation fee is waived only when a date is removed more than 14 days ahead during that campground's peak period, or more than five days ahead outside peak.
• The fee is one concession-camper fee for each removed date and campsite.

Cancellations can appear after release day or as arrival approaches, but DBCA does not publish a predictable schedule.
