Hardest Ningaloo campsites to book: 2026 cancellation data

Founder
On the Ningaloo coast, the hardest campsites to get with a cancellation alert in 2026 were the small ones. Schnerp users set more than a thousand requests for open Cape Range National Park and Warroora Coast campgrounds between late March and 9 September 2026. Of those, 76% got at least one matching opening on Park Stay WA. Osprey Bay, the Ningaloo campground Schnerp users watch most, came good for 82%. The smallest campgrounds, such as five-site Bungarra, sat at the bottom of the table.
Two Nyinggulara National Park campgrounds, South Lefroy Bay and Winderabandi, sat at or near zero. That isn't scarcity. DBCA closed every Nyinggulara campground after Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle, and none has a reopening date.
This is a ranking of how often Schnerp users got an opening, not a census of how full each campground is. For how the monthly release works, read our guide to the Ningaloo monthly booking drop.
Which Ningaloo campgrounds are hardest to get into?
Bungarra, North Mandu and Neds were the hardest open Ningaloo campgrounds for Schnerp users to get into in 2026, though all three are small samples. The table covers every Ningaloo coast campground with at least 15 Schnerp requests that were two weeks old or more by 23 September 2026. "Got an opening" means Park Stay WA showed a site that fitted the request's dates and stay length at some point while it was active.
| Campground | Area | Schnerp requests | Got an opening | Average days to first opening |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bungarra | Cape Range | under 50 | 43% | 7.5 |
| North Mandu | Cape Range | under 50 | 56% | 6.9 |
| Neds | Cape Range | 50 to 100 | 61% | 7.1 |
| Tulki Beach | Cape Range | 50 to 100 | 67% | 5.2 |
| Sandy Point | Warroora | 50 to 100 | 69% | 5.5 |
| Yardie Creek | Cape Range | 50 to 100 | 71% | 5.3 |
| Lagoon | Warroora | under 50 | 75% | 1.6 |
| Mesa | Cape Range | 100 to 200 | 79% | 4.4 |
| 14 Mile | Warroora | 100 to 200 | 80% | 3.4 |
| Osprey Bay | Cape Range | several hundred | 82% | 5.9 |
| The Ridge | Warroora | under 50 | 82% | 1.9 |
| Kurrajong | Cape Range | 100 to 200 | 85% | 4.9 |
| Stevens Camp | Warroora | under 50 | 92% | 0.7 |
Rows with under 100 requests are small samples. Read them as a direction, not a precise rate. The four campgrounds with more than 100 requests each (Osprey Bay, Kurrajong, Mesa and 14 Mile) all landed between 79% and 85%.
The Cape Range campgrounds together came in at 76% and the Warroora Coast campgrounds at 78%. So the coast as a whole is not the problem. The choice of campground inside it is.
Why are South Lefroy Bay and Winderabandi at zero?
South Lefroy Bay and Winderabandi are at zero because both are closed. None of the Schnerp requests for South Lefroy Bay got an opening, and the only Winderabandi match came within an hour of the request being set, on 31 March 2026.
DBCA's 21 April 2026 cyclone update said all five Nyinggulara campgrounds (Janes Bay, North Lefroy, Point Billie, South Lefroy and Winderabandi) need complete rebuilding. The Cape Range park page still says there is no estimated time for reopening, and DBCA's 15 September 2026 news release says they remain unavailable for booking. Schnerp's own scans agree: in September 2026 Park Stay WA showed every site at both campgrounds as unavailable on every date through March 2027.
I checked whether the requests were unusually picky. They weren't. Most watched the whole campground over a spread of dates, like requests elsewhere on the coast. If you're watching a Nyinggulara campground now, switch the alert to Osprey Bay or Yardie Creek until DBCA announces a reopening.
Why do the small Cape Range campgrounds come last?
The small Cape Range campgrounds come last because they have fewer sites to free up. DBCA describes Bungarra as a small, secluded campground with only five sites, and lists North Mandu and Neds as small campgrounds. Osprey Bay has 46 sites, Kurrajong 35 and Mesa 23.
The requests for Bungarra and North Mandu were not tighter than anywhere else. They averaged a minimum stay of about two nights or less, and none of them was limited to particular sites. A five-site campground just throws off fewer cancellations. When one does come up, the same few nights may not suit you.
That flips the usual advice. Osprey Bay is the name everyone wants. But among Schnerp users it was one of the most reliable places to pick up a cancellation later, and my read is that 46 sites simply produce more of them.
When do Ningaloo cancellations turn up?
Half of Ningaloo cancellations turn up in the final week before arrival. In the 90 days to 23 September 2026, Schnerp logged 4,962 cancellation openings at these Cape Range and Warroora Coast campgrounds. Each one is a campsite night that came free on Park Stay WA after someone had started watching it.
| Opened this close to arrival | Share of cancellation openings |
|---|---|
| 2 days or fewer | 23.0% |
| 7 days or fewer | 49.5% |
| 14 days or fewer | 69.2% |
| 30 days or fewer | 87.7% |
Only 3.1% came up more than 60 days before arrival.
DBCA's August 2026 booking FAQ says campers can cancel or change up to the day before arrival. That fits the pattern: plans fall over late, and the sites come back late.
Watchers didn't have to wait long either. Of the Schnerp requests that got an opening, about four in five saw their first one within seven days of setting the alert. If a trip is a month away and you have nothing, the most useful fortnight is still ahead of you.
DBCA also says the monthly release has cut cancellations. Its 15 September 2026 release says cancelled campsite nights in August 2026 were almost 80 per cent lower than in August 2025. That is DBCA's figure, not ours. It means fewer openings to go around, which makes each alert count for more.
How long does a Ningaloo cancellation last?
Most Ningaloo cancellations last minutes to hours, not days. Of 4,539 cancellation openings at these campgrounds that Schnerp saw close again in the 90 days to 23 September 2026, 29.9% were gone within 5 minutes and 58.4% within an hour. By 24 hours, 93.0% had been taken.
That leaves a real window. About four in ten lasted longer than an hour, so a phone alert you act on at lunch can still work. Checking Park Stay WA once in the morning and once at night will miss most of them.
Which Ningaloo campground should you watch this season?
Watch Osprey Bay, Kurrajong or Mesa for summer and autumn 2027 stays, and add a second campground if your dates are fixed. In Cape Range these three had the most Schnerp requests and the best rates, and none of them is on DBCA's summer closure list.
Three dated closures change the list for the next few months:
| Campground | What DBCA says |
|---|---|
| 14 Mile | Whole campground closed for works from Thursday 29 October 2026 |
| Bungarra, North Mandu, Tulki | Closed for the low-demand season, 1 November 2026 to 15 March 2027 |
| All five Nyinggulara campgrounds | Closed after Cyclone Narelle, no reopening date |
So 14 Mile's 80% is history for now. For a November to mid-March trip, your realistic Cape Range choices are Osprey Bay, Kurrajong, Mesa, Neds and Yardie Creek, plus the 4WD-only One K and Boat Harbour.
The next big date is the release itself. DBCA's news release says the Tuesday 6 October 2026 release at 10am AWST covers stays from 1 to 29 April 2027. The campground pages describe the same block as 1 to 30 April and warn that demand for the WA school holidays will be very high. If you miss out that morning, set alerts on two or three of the larger campgrounds for your dates rather than one small one.
The same pattern shows up elsewhere in Western Australia. At Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park, 29% of a small group of Schnerp requests got an opening. Schnerp saw only seven cancellation openings there in the 90 days to 23 September 2026. Inland, Dales in Karijini has its own booking quirks. You can also see Osprey Bay on Schnerp.
How this ranking was worked out
This ranking uses Schnerp's own scan data, pulled on 23 September 2026. It counts requests created from late March to 9 September 2026, so every request had at least two weeks to catch an opening. Outcomes are tracked to 23 September. A campground needed at least 15 such requests to appear.
A few limits are worth knowing:
- It measures demand as well as supply. Schnerp only watches dates someone asked for, so a campground's rate reflects what people requested as well as how full it was.
- Most Cape Range and Warroora campgrounds were closed after Cyclone Narelle until 27 April 2026, so the data mostly covers May to September.
- A request counts as matched if a fitting site was already free when it was set. That happened more often at the smaller Warroora campgrounds, which is why Stevens Camp and The Ridge show under two days to a first opening.
- The timing tables count cancellation-sized openings only. They leave out the monthly release, when hundreds of site nights appear at once.
- Karijini's Dales campground is left out because its scan data stops on 30 August 2026.
