Rottnest Island camping booking: the monthly open day

Rottnest Island camping is booked through Stay Rottnest, the Rottnest Island Authority's booking system. The Stay Rottnest Campground goes on sale one month at a time. On the first Wednesday of each month at 8:30am AWST, Stay Rottnest opens bookings for stays nine months ahead.

The next Rottnest open day is Wednesday 7 October 2026 at 8:30am AWST, and it releases June 2027 stays. The online waiting room opens at 6am. If your dates are already on sale and the campground is booked out, you are waiting on a returned booking. I cover how those behave at Rottnest below.

When does Rottnest campground booking open?

Rottnest campground booking opens on the Stay Rottnest open day for your month, which falls on the first Wednesday eight calendar months earlier. June 2027 opens on 7 October 2026, for example. The Rottnest Island Authority describes this as releasing "the next booking period, nine months in advance". The same open day covers every Stay Rottnest room type, including the campground, the hostel and the self-contained units.

Stay Rottnest's June 2027 booking guide lists these open days, marked "subject to change":

For the Stay Rottnest Campground over the 2027-28 summer holidays, plan around two dates: 7 April 2027 for December and 5 May 2027 for January.

What the Stay Rottnest Campground has

The Stay Rottnest Campground has 43 non-powered, sand-covered campsites close to the main settlement. Each site takes up to six people in up to two tents, or four single swags, according to the June 2027 booking guide. There is a communal camp kitchen with barbecues and a bathroom block, and the campground is a short walk from The Basin and Pinky Beach.

A few campground details differ from the rest of Stay Rottnest:

• Campground bookings are paid in full when you book. Self-contained units only need a 25% deposit.
• Check-out is 10am, and quiet hours at the campground run from 9pm to 7am.
• Stay Rottnest's FAQ says campers check in at the Visitor Centre and collect a sticker for the tent that confirms the site.

Don't confuse the Stay Rottnest Campground with Discovery Resorts Rottnest Island. Discovery sells glamping tents behind Pinky Beach through Discovery Parks. It is a separate business with separate bookings, and a Stay Rottnest open day does not release its tents.

How the Rottnest open day waiting room works

The Stay Rottnest open day uses a virtual waiting room, and arriving early does not get you a better place. The waiting room opens at 6am AWST. Everyone inside it before 8:30am gets a random queue position, whether they joined at 6am or 8:25am.

Getting into the waiting room takes a phone. Stay Rottnest asks for your mobile number and sends a one-time passcode, which you have 10 minutes to enter. Temporary or virtual numbers are not accepted. Some international carriers block the SMS. If yours never arrives, the guide says to call Stay Rottnest on 1800 111 111 from 8:30am instead.

When your turn comes, you have 30 minutes to enter the booking site. After that you go to the back of the queue. You can book a maximum of two units per transaction, and a booking is only confirmed once payment is authorised.

Because the queue identifies you by phone number, extra browser tabs do not add chances. Extra people with their own phones do. I wrote up that tactic in our opening day booking queue tips.

Booking rules that catch campers

Stay Rottnest's booking terms, effective for bookings made from 4 March 2026, have several rules that decide whether your dates are bookable at all:

• Minimum stays. Minimum night stays may apply, and fixed arrival and departure dates may be set over the summer and Easter school holidays.
• The 5/3 rule. To book up to three nights into a month that is not on sale yet, you need at least five nights in the open month. The terms say this does not apply to every open day.
• The June 2027 cap. On the 7 October 2026 open day there are no bookings into July 2027, so you must leave by Thursday 1 July 2027.

What Schnerp has seen at Rottnest

Rottnest returns mostly show up months before arrival, not in the last fortnight. Between 1 May and 22 September 2026, Schnerp logged 310 cancellation-style openings across 34 Stay Rottnest room types. Of those, 281 were for arrivals more than 90 days away. Most Schnerp users at Rottnest watch dates months out, so that skews the count. It still shows that far-off dates do come back.

The clearest pattern followed an open day. The Wednesday 6 May 2026 open day released January 2027. In the 15 days from that open day, Schnerp logged 134 returns for January 2027 nights, and 103 of them came by the Friday. Most were hostel and dormitory beds (131 of the 134).

The Stay Rottnest Campground is thinner in Schnerp's data, because only a handful of Schnerp users watch it. Schnerp has seen three campground openings since April 2026. One was a three-night stay from 26 December 2026. It appeared at 2:39pm AWST on Monday 3 August 2026 and was gone by Schnerp's next hourly check.

Schnerp checks Stay Rottnest about once an hour, so short-lived openings can be missed. Of the openings Schnerp saw close before arrival over the same period, about two-thirds were gone within a day.

What to do if your Rottnest campground dates are full

If your Rottnest campground dates are full, watch hardest in the two weeks after the open day for your month. Stay Rottnest's 14-day cooling-off gives a full refund when the stay is more than 30 days away. Its own booking guide says some people book "more than they need, only to dump it later". My read is that spare bookings come back while that refund is still free, which fits the January 2027 returns above.
